Spiritual Discernment And Simple Math

The average American will live 630,000 hours. He will sleep and eat 44% of his life away (270,000 hours) and work 16% of his life away (100,000 hours).

That leaves the average Joe 40% of his life to do with whatever he pleases; garden, mow the yard, golf, sew, get drunk, build houses for Habitat, run for office, invent a better light bulb, etc., etc.

40% disposable income, I mean, disposable lifetime.

Now, the average American spends virtually no time reading the Bible and generous estimates say the average American prays 3 minutes a day. He also attends church rarely, but for argument sake let's say he's far above average. Not, not he, but you. Let's say that you are far above average in religious practice. You attend church Sunday morning, Sunday night, and Wednesday night. You read the Bible and pray, on average, 30 minutes a day. What percentage of your lifetime would you spend intentionally seeking to know God in that case?

5%, and that's rounding up. The average American spends more time flossing and brushing than actively pursuing a relationship with God.

What about you? Too busy for the things of God?

Check this out . . . 5% . . . on a really good day.

5%

I think when people view their relationship with God with this lifetime perspective, they still balk at it. They think, well I have all kinds of time later to have a relationship with God. Bad mistake, never presume upon the mercies of God.

But when we look at this by the day...well...now your hitting a lot closer to home with me. Seriously...if I had a relationship with my wife, like your telling us we have with God...why would she have me? Really...she would tell me, there is absolutely no way you could love me and interact with me less than 3 minutes, 5 minutes on a good day, unless it is Sunday. And then you would do so reluctantly, and probably really like to be someplace else, i.e., golf course, fishing, stadium or with your buddies. Most people love their relationship with God so much, they can't wait to get to lunch on Sunday's!

I thank the Lord that he provides me grace and mercy because sometimes I give him less attention in my day than I give to my dog! I'm humbled, my sin grieves me.

Thanks, Alan. And then, think about the issue of pastors, seminarians, theology professors. We can talk about God, prepare our sermons, teachings, and papers, and still spend no time with Him.

I like thinking about church as a bride. The marriage relationship illustration that Paul used in Ephesians makes church make sense. And, it makes my relationship with Him make sense, brings it into perspective.

Great post.

The empirical can be frightening, or sobering, as the case may be.

It is quiet illuminating to consider how little time we spend on our spiritual health in the context of all that we get in return for our small investment.

"reading the bible" is what the pharisee's did, and because of their "head" knowledge(knowledge falsely so-called) they never did "experience The Messiah and The Power that raised Him from among the dead" ;-(

And the religious and religions of this day and age?

They but carry on the legacy of the pharisee's for Truth IS "they are ever learning and never able to come to knowledge of The Truth" ;-(

Those who have "experienced The Messiah and The Power that raised Him from among the dead, "have received, not the spirit of the world, but The Spirit which is of The Only True GOD so that we might know the things that are freely given to us of HIM. Which things we also share, not in the words that man's wisdom teaches, but which The Holy Spirit comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man does not receive the things of The Spirit of The Only True GOD for they are foolishness unto him and neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned."

And the spiritual man is truly "a stranger and pilgrim while on this earth" for he knows that "the WHOLE(not just a portion) world is under the control of the evil one".......

Hope is there would be those who experience The Miracle that is receiving "a love of The Truth" for they take unto The Call of The Only True GOD, Father(Creator)of ALL to "Come Out of her, MY people"!

They will no longer will have their portion with this world and it's systems of religious theo'ry'logy.......

Most certainly The Life is not a matter of percentages.......

It is either having it your way, your will, or "Father, not my will, But THY Will Be Done"!

"Choose you this day whom(WHOM) you will serve".......

Father Help! and HE does.......
